The Lion's Tail Inaugural Ride - A Ride to Remember Featured

Lions Tail RideThe sun finally came out on June 22 to greet the more than 115 motorcyclists who gathered in Lion’s Head to take part in The Lion’s Tail inaugural ride.

This year the net proceeds are being donated to five Bruce Peninsula school breakfast clubs.

The Lion’s Tail, a destination touring route encompassing much of the Bruce Peninsula, was founded by Dan Cassel in June, 2018. As a new resident to the Bruce Peninsula, he was enamoured with the landscape and saw the potential for a tourist initiative to bring motorcyclists and more tourism to the area.

Dan had his motorcycle license before he got his driver’s license. Since then he has traveled on two wheels across Canada and into much of the United States. He has been to The Tail of the Dragon, another motorcycle route, and many big bike events over the years. When he saw the opportunity to create his own destination route he jumped on it.

Promoting the uniqueness and beauty of the Bruce Peninsula and welcoming a new breed of tourists to the area was the goal when he founded The Lion’s Tail. The inaugural ride was designed to introduce the new route in a big way while also raising money for a very important cause – feeding Bruce Peninsula’s youth so that they have the best start to their school day.

Planning such an event was a major undertaking, from advertising, to determining the route, gathering door prizes, arranging volunteers, and fielding questions multiple times a day from riders looking for places to stay and more information. Dan had been involved in organizing previous rides but nothing to this extent.

The biggest concern leading up to the big day was the weather. The sun decided to make a very welcome appearance and more than 115 riders showed up to register at Lion’s Head Beach Motel Saturday morning. Kickstands were up at 11am as planned and the parade of motorcycles headed down Bruce Rd. 9 for a 180km ride which took them past some of the most beautiful landscape in the country.

The ride concluded at Bluewater Park in Wiarton where vendors were set up to greet the big group. Door prize draws, thanks to generous donations by local businesses, sent many of the bikers home with gifts such as t-shirts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and even a golf bag.

In total, $2,173.50 was raised, which will be divided up among the five schools breakfast clubs, located in Tobermory, Lion’s Head, Wiarton, Hepworth, and Sauble Beach.

The ride was a resounding success, and plans have already begun for next year’s event which will take place on June 20, 2020. Riders from this year’s event have been giving rave reviews. Visit www.TheLionsTail.ca for more information.
