BCCOM: MLA Ride recap & Lane Filter Response from the Ministry Featured

BCCOM logo MLA Ride:  A big thank you to everyone who came out and participated in the 27th Annual MLA Ride.

Its a very important event and a great way to help get the word out to the general public that motorcyclists are on the road again so, LOOK OUT.

"With warmer weather in the forecast more motorcycle riders will be hitting the road – and that's prompting a safety warning from the B.C. government.

According to ICBC, the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes from January to July 2018 doubled from the year before.

To try to prevent more deaths this season, safety advocates and members of B.C.'s Legislature donned helmets and climbed on motorcycles to promote safe riding."

Lane Filter Response from the Ministry.

After months of waiting and some back and forth e-mails here is the Ministry of Transportation official response to our lane filtering proposal .

Good Morning:

Thank you for your email. My apologies for the delay in this response to your questions regarding our review of lane filtering.

Improving safety on our roads and highways is a priority for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Changes to the Motor Vehicle Act must be made thoughtfully and with consideration for all roads users. That is the why the Ministry continues to monitor the results of lane filtering in other jurisdictions in North America, Australia and Europe. This research includes reviewing regulations, legislation, and best practices for possible implementation in this province. While some jurisdictions have released findings, the data is still limited on the overall benefits and challenges of lane sharing and filtering. There are limitations in the safety research currently available and the data cannot estimate how the risk of being involved in a collision changes when riders chose to lane filter. In addition, there is insufficient data on the risk to other road users, such as pedestrians, even though they are considered to be the most at risk group.

The ministry will continue to monitor the latest research and results from other jurisdictions on lane filtering, however; we have no plans to implement lane filtering on BC roads at this time.

Thank you again for your email.

Sincerely

Kenedee Ludwar, P.Eng.
Director, Traffic and Highway Safety Engineering
Ministry of Tranportation and Infrastructure

We understand that implementing something that is not the norm in North America can be scary, but  the data is out there and since 40% of our members who filled out this years polls on what we work on voted Lane Filtering #1, we will be working on collecting as much data for both sides as possible and resubmitting the proposal this fall.

We have been told our Transferable Plate proposal is till under review.
