New Langford Motorcycle Shop Opens: Duncan's Speed & Cycle Featured

LANGFORD – Island motorcyclists are revved-up and ready to celebrate with motorcycles and music at today’s grand opening of the island’s newest chopper shop, Duncan’s Speed and Cycle in Langford.

Duncan Rourke is a North Vancouver native who moved to the Island in 2007 to continue his 20-year career in the Harley industry. That same need for freedom which originally drew him to riding motorcycles is now what drives his passion and fuels his new venture of owning an independent bike shop. The 52-year-old who has spent half his life with a leg swung over a v-twin engine, is launching the retail parts and full-service facility to help cater to the growing market of island Harley riders.

“From the moment the garage doors rolled-up and the open sign flickered on, we have been packed with bikes for service and repairs,” said Rourke, who is already being forced to look for a bigger lease location to meet demand. “People often want the local shop experience where they can count on staff going the extra mile to ensure extra miles of trouble-free riding.”

Rourke, who has boasted customer bike builds featured on the cover of magazines like American Iron, brings a loyal following from his former position at the island Harley franchise. He is joined by mechanics Dave Gerty and Mark Druwe at the shop located where Phoenix Cycle once operated. The grand opening event pays tribute to the 21-year legacy of Ted Gordon upon his retirement from Phoenix Cycle, both he and the shop were featured in a TV segment of Farkle Garage.

Steak on a stick and smoked pizzas, music and entertainment including burlesque and roller skate performances, and a show-and-shine boasting some of the island’s top custom bikes and bike builders, is bringing many curious dads out today to survey the sea of chrome during the Father’s Day weekend event; it also serves as a fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. “People sometimes misperceive bikers as hooligans and hell raisers,” said Rourke, “but we’re more often just hard-working neighbours and community minded people, evidenced by the $11.8 million raised by bikers for Canadian charities every year,” said Rourke.
BACKGROUNDER
As B.C. motorists continue to face pain at the pumps with historic high gas prices, more drivers are becoming riders of two wheeled vehicles.  Over 800,000 on-road motorcycles are registered in Canada and roughly 125,000 in B.C., representing roughly three per cent of all registered vehicles in the province. According to ICBC, motorcycle and moped insurance policies have increased annually on Vancouver Island by about 1,000 new riders annually, with roughly 1,400 bikes insured in Langford alone where Duncan Speed and Cycle opened their doors.

Community Roots

Victoria’s motorcycling community has made its way onto the pages of the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame, notable for a century of ridership in the Victoria Motorcycle Club established in 1912 by 21 riders; it now has over 250 members. In a news report from 1912 about the club, the CRD boasted about 75 motorcycles in use, but local dealers projected 300 new bikes sales for 2013.  One of the club’s first official hill climbs was at Mt. Douglas was in 1921 and by 1927, the club had registered as a non-profit, as it continues today. One of the club’s finest treasures, besides the 172-acres it owns off Happy Valley Road for off-road motorcycling events, is its collection of more than 40 trophies dating back to 1913. A trophy donated by the Kirk Coal Company in 1930 continues to be awarded annually to the winner of an experts-only enduro. One of the more unusual trophies in their collection is a chrome-plated army helmet worn by club member Cecil Frampton in the First World War that he donated in 1935.

Driving the Economy

The Canadian Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council reports that the $1.5 billion market of motorcycle sales in Canada experienced a 25% increase so far this season for April 2019 compared to April of 2018. British Columbia closely follows Alberta for annual retail motorcycle sales in Canada, while Ontario and Quebec combined account for more than 50% of national new bike sales. Recent studies by the Motorcycle Confederation of Canada reports that over 23,000 Canadians are employed in jobs relating to motorcycle, while also noting that $56-million is spent annually by British Columbians for motorcycle equipment and parts, another $18-million on protective apparel, $13-million on gasoline, and about $900,000 in food, beverages and lodging while travelling by bike each year.

Motorcycles in Recent Media

Last month was Motorcycle Awareness Month in B.C., during which time the BC Coroner Service announced that at least two people will die in motorcycle crashes on B.C. roads each weekend this summer, if this year follows the same trend as last year. ICBC data backs the trend, suggesting that on average, motorcycles are involved in about 2,400 crashes each year in B.C., resulting in about 1,600 people being injured and over 30 deaths. Hard on the heels of the BC Coroner releasing its stats, Vancouver based Damon Motorcycles announced that they garnered investments of $2.5 million in seed financing for an Advanced Warning System for motorcycles that aims to eliminate motorcycle deaths altogether by 2030 for users of the forward, side and rear crash-detection and prevention alerting technology that they are pioneering.
